Virginia Tax-Free Weekend 2022

During Virginia's three-day sales tax holiday (Aug. 5 to 7), you can buy these items without paying tax.

What's included in Virginia's tax-free weekend?

During tax-free weekend in Virginia, you can buy the following without paying sales tax:

  • Qualified school supplies - $20 or less per item.
  • Qualified clothing and footwear - $100 or less per item.
  • Hurricane and emergency preparedness products, including portable generators ($1,000 or less per item); gas-powered chainsaws ($350 or less per item); other qualified items ($60 or less per item).
  • Energy Star and WaterSense Products for personal use - $2,500 or less per item.

While some states hold separate tax-free weekends for back-to-school supplies and emergency preparedness, Virginia combines theirs all into one weekend.

Note that, even within the tax-free categories, there are exceptions. For example, in the clothing category, handbags, jewelry, watches, sunglasses and other accessories are not eligible for waived taxes. See a full list of items that are included (and not included) in Virginia's tax holiday.

Happy Savings!
