If you’re in the mood for a fruity salad that’s both light and refreshing, look no further than this Orange Fluff salad.

Orange Fluff

The combination of juicy mandarin oranges, whipped cream, and fluffy marshmallows makes for a delightful dish. There are many different variations for it, but this one is my particular favorite.

What is orange fluff?

Orange fluff is a Jell-O salad that has been around, surprisingly, since the 1950s. It often includes orange Jell-O, whipped cream, and cottage cheese. It’s popularly served during the summer at BBQs, church gatherings, potlucks, etc.

What should I know before making this orange fluff recipe?

This orange salad recipe tastes its best after being stored in the fridge for a day. This is because it has time to soak up all the various flavors to be the best it can be.

If you do decide to add additional ingredients, experiment with them one at a time so that you can enjoy the full range of flavors in this delicious recipe. Plus, you can weed through the variations and see which you like best.

Ingredients

  • 1 Tub Cool Whip (8 ounces)
  • 1 Box Orange Gelatin Powder (3 ounces)
  • 1 Can Mandarin Oranges, drained (14 ounces)
  • 1 ½ Cups Mini Marshmallows
  • 1 Cup Cottage Cheese
  • 1 Cup Sweetened Shredded Coconut

Directions

  • Prep – Measure out your ingredients.
  • Stir – Mix the Cool Whip and Jell-O together.
  • Serve – Add the rest of the ingredients, stir, serve, and enjoy!

Can I use Instant Pudding in Fluff Salad?

You could possibly swap out the cottage cheese for vanilla instant pudding, but this might make it thinner and much sweeter. Some prefer it this way, but it’s not a popular substitution. So, while you can use instant pudding in fluff salads, I wouldn’t suggest it, based on the more popular preferences.

Is Orange Fluff a dessert or salad?

There is a bit of fun controversy around this question. Orange fluff has “salad” added in the name most of the time. However, it’s also considered a dessert.

Let’s be clear, fluff salad recipes don’t match the Merriam Webster definition of “salad.” So, in the specific sense of the word, it’s not a salad. It’s just a sweet side dish or dessert, however you decide to serve it and eat it.

Can you make Orange Fluff Salad Ahead of Time?

Yes, you can make fluff salad in advance! In fact, I highly suggest in order to get the best flavor out of the dish. This recipe can easily be prepared and stored overnight in the refrigerator. The orange mandarins might provide additional moisture to this salad, so just stir it in again before serving.

How do I serve Orange Fluff Salad?

This scrumptious orange salad can be served as a side for most meals, especially those served at get-togethers or potlucks. It also works great as a dessert or even a snack for yourself.

You can swap out the orange Jell-O for another flavor to switch things up or even match a theme. If you do this, you’ll want to swap out the oranges and use the fruit that matches the Jell-O flavor.
